Oracle HTTP Server Web Listener memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability marked as problematic has been reported in Oracle HTTP Server. This affects an unknown function of the component Web Listener. Performing a manipulation results in memory corruption. This vulnerability was named CVE-2009-0023. There is no available exploit. It is suggested to install a patch to address this issue.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Oracle HTTP Server (Web Server) (the affected version is unknown). It has been classified as problematic. This affects an unknown code of the component Web Listener. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:

The apr_strmatch_precompile function in strmatch/apr_strmatch.c in Apache APR-util before 1.3.5 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (daemon crash) via crafted input involving (1) a .htaccess file used with the Apache HTTP Server, (2) the SVNMasterURI directive in the mod_dav_svn module in the Apache HTTP Server, (3) the mod_apreq2 module for the Apache HTTP Server, or (4) an application that uses the libapreq2 library, which triggers a heap-based buffer underflow.

The bug was discovered 06/01/2009. The weakness was presented 04/16/2013 by Matt as Oracle Critical Patch Update Advisory - April 2013 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at oracle.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2009-0023 since 12/15/2008. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 5 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67876 (Oracle Linux 3 : httpd (ELSA-2009-1108)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 118824 (HP-UX Apache-based Web Server Remote Denial of Service Vulnerability (HPSBUX02612)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (50964), Tenable (67876), SecurityFocus (BID 35221†), OSVDB (55059†) and Secunia (SA35284†).
