A vulnerability was found in cURL and libcURL up to 7.49.0 on Windows (Network Utility Software). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects the function LoadLibraryEx of the component DLL Loader. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-264. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

The weakness was presented 05/30/2016 with Huawei as Windows DLL hijacking as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at curl.haxx.se. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with the project team. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2016-4802 since 05/13/2016. The exploitation is known to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. A simple authentication is necessary for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 23 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.
