Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in ntpd up to 4.2.8p7 (Network Management Software). Affected is an unknown code block of the component MAC Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:
ntpd in NTP 4.x before 4.2.8p8 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (ephemeral-association demobilization) by sending a spoofed crypto-NAK packet with incorrect authentication data at a certain time.
The weakness was published 06/02/2016 by Miroslav Lichvar with Red Hat as confirmed release notes (Website). The advisory is available at support.ntp.org. The public release has been coordinated with the vendor. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2016-4953 since 05/23/2016. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 91662 (SUSE SLED12 / SLES12 Security Update : ntp (SUSE-SU-2016:1563-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 371401 (Cisco UCS 6200 Series Fabric Interconnects Multiple Vulnerabilities in Network Time Protocol Daemon (CSCuz92668)).
Applying the patch 4.2.8p8 is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The release notes contains the following remark:
NTP Consortium members at the Partner and Premier levels received pre-release patch access.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (91662), SecurityFocus (BID 91010†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1036037†). Further details are available at kb.cert.org.
