A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in ntpd up to 4.2.8p7 (Network Management Software). Affected by this issue is an unknown function of the component Autokey Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. Impacted is availability.
The weakness was disclosed 06/02/2016 by Miroslav Lichvar with Red Hat as confirmed release notes (Website). The advisory is shared for download at support.ntp.org. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2016-4955 since 05/23/2016. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 371401 (Cisco UCS 6200 Series Fabric Interconnects Multiple Vulnerabilities in Network Time Protocol Daemon (CSCuz92668)).
Applying the patch 4.2.8p8 is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The release notes contains the following remark:
