Details
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in ntpd up to 4.2.8p7 (Network Management Software). Affected by this vulnerability is the function receive of the file ntp_proto.c of the component Validation Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. As an impact it is known to affect integrity, and availability.
The weakness was released 06/02/2016 as confirmed release notes (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at support.ntp.org. The public release was coordinated with the project team. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2016-4954 since 05/23/2016. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 91662 (SUSE SLED12 / SLES12 Security Update : ntp (SUSE-SU-2016:1563-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. Applying the patch 4.2.8p8 is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The release notes contains the following remark:
