Details
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in X.Org libX11 1.5.0/1.5.99.901. This vulnerability affects the function XAllocColorCells/_XkbReadGetDeviceInfoReply/_XkbReadGeomShapes/_XkbReadGetGeometryReply/_XkbReadKeySyms/_XkbReadKeyActions/_XkbReadKeyBehaviors/_XkbReadModifierMap of the component Graphical Library. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Multiple buffer overflows in X.org libX11 1.5.99.901 (1.6 RC1) and earlier allow X servers to cause a denial of service (crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via crafted length or index values to the (1) XAllocColorCells, (2) _XkbReadGetDeviceInfoReply, (3) _XkbReadGeomShapes, (4) _XkbReadGetGeometryReply, (5) _XkbReadKeySyms, (6) _XkbReadKeyActions, (7) _XkbReadKeyBehaviors, (8) _XkbReadModifierMap, (9) _XkbReadExplicitComponents, (10) _XkbReadVirtualModMap, (11) _XkbReadGetNamesReply, (12) _XkbReadGetMapReply, (13) _XimXGetReadData, (14) XListFonts, (15) XListExtensions, and (16) XGetFontPath functions.
The weakness was shared 05/23/2013 by Ilja van Sprundel with IOActive as not defined advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at x.org. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-1997 since 02/19/2013. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be initiated remotely. The successful exploitation needs a single authentication. Technical details and also a private exploit are known.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 66602 (Debian DSA-2693-1 : libx11 - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 185112 (HP-UX Running X Windows Libraries Multiple Vulnerabilities (HPSBUX03049)).
Upgrading to version 1.5.99.902 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at cgit.freedesktop.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (84495), Tenable (66602), SecurityFocus (BID 60122†), OSVDB (93661†) and Secunia (SA53557†).
