A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in X.Org libFS 1.0.1/1.0.2/1.0.3/1.0.4. This issue affects the function FSOpenServer of the component Graphical Library. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. X.org libFS 1.0.4 and earlier allows X servers to trigger allocation of insufficient memory and a buffer overflow via vectors related to an unexpected sign extension in the FSOpenServer function.

The weakness was published 05/23/2013 by Ilja van Sprundel with IOActive as not defined advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at x.org. The public release has been coordinated with X.Org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-1996 since 02/19/2013. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be initiated remotely.
