A vulnerability has been found in X.Org libxcb up to 1.8.1 and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function read_packet of the component Graphical Library. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a numeric error vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-189. Integer overflow in X.org libxcb 1.9 and earlier allows X servers to trigger allocation of insufficient memory and a buffer overflow via vectors related to the read_packet function.
The weakness was disclosed 05/23/2013 by Ilja van Sprundel with IOActive as not defined advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at x.org. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with X.Org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2013-2064 since 02/19/2013. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be launched remotely. A single authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details and also a private exploit are known.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67114 (SuSE 11.2 Security Update : xorg-x11-libxcb (SAT Patch Number 7760)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350250 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for libX11,libXcursor,libXfixes,libXi,libXrandr,libXrender,libXres,libXt,libXv,libXvMC,libXxf86dga,libXxf86vm,libdmx,xorg-x11-proto-devel: ALAS-2014-452).
Upgrading to version 1.9.1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at cgit.freedesktop.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
