A vulnerability was found in X.Org libdmx 1.0.2/1.0.99.1/1.1.0/1.1.1/1.1.2 and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is the function DMXGetScreenAttributes/DMXGetWindowAttributes/DMXGetInputAttributes of the component Graphical Library. Multiple integer overflows in X.org libdmx 1.1.2 and earlier allow X servers to trigger allocation of insufficient memory and a buffer overflow via vectors related to the (1) DMXGetScreenAttributes, (2) DMXGetWindowAttributes, and (3) DMXGetInputAttributes functions.
The weakness was presented 05/23/2013 by Ilja van Sprundel with IOActive as not defined advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at x.org. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2013-1992 since 02/19/2013. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be launched remotely. The requirement for exploitation is a simple authentication. Technical details as well as a private exploit are known.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 75046 (openSUSE Security Update : libdmx (openSUSE-SU-2013:1029-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 167200 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for xorg-x11-libs (SUSE-SU-2014:0881-1)).
Upgrading to version 1.1.3 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at cgit.freedesktop.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
