A vulnerability has been found in X.Org libXp 1.0.0/1.0.1 and classified as critical. Multiple integer overflows in X.org libXp 1.0.1 and earlier allow X servers to trigger allocation of insufficient memory and a buffer overflow via vectors related to the (1) XpGetAttributes, (2) XpGetOneAttribute, (3) XpGetPrinterList, and (4) XpQueryScreens functions.
The weakness was released 05/23/2013 by Ilja van Sprundel with IOActive as not defined advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at x.org. The public release was coordinated with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-2062 since 02/19/2013. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be initiated remotely. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67110 (SuSE 11.2 / 11.3 Security Update : xorg-x11-libXp (SAT Patch Numbers 7844 / 7938)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350750 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for libX11 libXcursor libXfixes libXi libXrandr libXrender libXres libXt libXv libXvMC libXxf86dga libXxf86vm libdmx xorg-x11-proto-devel: AL2012-2015-082).
Upgrading to version 1.0.2 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at cgit.freedesktop.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
