A vulnerability was found in X.Org libXinerama up to 1.1.2 and classified as critical. This issue affects the function XineramaQueryScreens of the component Graphical Library. Integer overflow in X.org libXinerama 1.1.2 and earlier allows X servers to trigger allocation of insufficient memory and a buffer overflow via vectors related to the XineramaQueryScreens function.
The weakness was disclosed 05/23/2013 by Ilja van Sprundel with IOActive as not defined advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at x.org. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with X.Org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-1985 since 02/19/2013. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be initiated remotely. The successful exploitation requires a simple authentication. Technical details as well as a private exploit are known.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 75040 (openSUSE Security Update : libXinerama (openSUSE-SU-2013:1026-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 167200 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for xorg-x11-libs (SUSE-SU-2014:0881-1)).
Upgrading to version 1.1.3 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at cgit.freedesktop.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
