A vulnerability was found in Google Chrome 27.0.1453.94 (Web Browser) and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown code block of the component SSL Socket Handler. Google Chrome before 27.0.1453.110 does not properly handle SSL sockets, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (memory corruption) via unspecified vectors.
The weakness was released 06/04/2013 by Sebastien Marchand (bobbyholley) with Chromium Development Community as not defined changelog entry (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at googlechromereleases.blogspot.com. The public release was coordinated with Google. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-2863 since 04/11/2013. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $100k and more. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 66852 (Debian DSA-2706-1 : chromium-browser - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 121225 (Google Chrome Prior to 27.0.1453.110 Multiple Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading to version 27.0.1453.110 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at google.com. The problem might be mitigated by replacing the product with Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Internet Explorer or Opera as an alternative. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
