CPython up to 2.7.11/3.4.4/3.5.1 smtplib Library protection mechanism

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in CPython up to 2.7.11/3.4.4/3.5.1 (Programming Language Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code of the component smtplib Library. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a protection mechanism vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-693. The product does not use or incorrectly uses a protection mechanism that provides sufficient defense against directed attacks against the product. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

The smtplib library in CPython (aka Python) before 2.7.12, 3.x before 3.4.5, and 3.5.x before 3.5.2 does not return an error when StartTLS fails, which might allow man-in-the-middle attackers to bypass the TLS protections by leveraging a network position between the client and the registry to block the StartTLS command, aka a "StartTLS stripping attack."

The weakness was shared 09/02/2016 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at openwall.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2016-0772 since 12/16/2015. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 92274 (Fedora 23 : python (2016-a0853405eb)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 176661 (Debian Security Update for python3.4 (DLA 1663-1)).

Upgrading to version 2.7.12, 3.4.5 or 3.5.2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
