Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in FFmpeg 1.0 (Multimedia Processing Software). This affects the function qdm2_decode_super_block of the file libavcodec/qdm2.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, and integrity. The summary by CVE is:
Array index error in the qdm2_decode_super_block function in libavcodec/qdm2.c in FFmpeg before 1.1 allows remote attackers to have an unspecified impact via crafted QDM2 data, which triggers an out-of-bounds array access.
The issue has been introduced in 09/30/2012. The weakness was published 12/01/2012 by Mateusz Jurczyk and Gynvael Coldwind (j00ru) with Google Security Team as qdm2: check array index before use, fix out of array accesses as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is shared at git.videolan.org. The public release has been coordinated with the project team. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2013-0846 since 01/07/2013. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 62 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 72355 (Debian DSA-2855-1 : libav - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 175271 (Debian Security Update for libav (DSA-2855-1)).
Upgrading to version 1.1 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at git.videolan.org. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.videolan.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (89876), Tenable (72355), SecurityFocus (BID 63796†), OSVDB (94259†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-44238†).
