A vulnerability has been found in FFmpeg 1.0 (Multimedia Processing Software) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown part of the file libavcodec/alsdec.c of the component Block Size Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. libavcodec/alsdec.c in FFmpeg before 1.0.4 allows remote attackers to have an unspecified impact via a crafted block length, which triggers an out-of-bounds write.
The issue has been introduced in 09/30/2012. The weakness was released 12/12/2012 by Mateusz Jurczyk and Gynvael Coldwind (j00ru) with Google Security Team as alsdec: check block length as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is available at git.videolan.org. The public release was coordinated with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-0845 since 01/07/2013. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 73 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 72355 (Debian DSA-2855-1 : libav - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 175271 (Debian Security Update for libav (DSA-2855-1)).
Upgrading to version 1.1 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at git.videolan.org. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.videolan.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
