A vulnerability was found in FFmpeg 1.0 (Multimedia Processing Software) and classified as critical. This issue affects the function adpcm_decode_frame of the file libavcodec/adpcm.c. Off-by-one error in the adpcm_decode_frame function in libavcodec/adpcm.c in FFmpeg before 1.0.4 allows remote attackers to have an unspecified impact via crafted DK4 data, which triggers an out-of-bounds array access.
The issue has been introduced in 09/30/2012. The weakness was disclosed 12/12/2012 by Mateusz Jurczyk and Gynvael Coldwind with Google Security Team as adpcm: fix off by 1 error and out of array access in DK4 as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). It is possible to read the advisory at git.videolan.org. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the project team. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-0844 since 01/07/2013. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 73 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 70807 (Debian DSA-2793-1 : libav - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks.
Upgrading to version 1.1 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at git.videolan.org. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.videolan.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
