A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Firefox up to 21.0 (Web Browser). It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects an unknown code block of the component SVG Handler. The SVG filter implementation in Mozilla Firefox before 22.0, Firefox ESR 17.x before 17.0.7, Thunderbird before 17.0.7, and Thunderbird ESR 17.x before 17.0.7 allows remote attackers to read pixel values, and possibly bypass the Same Origin Policy and read text from a different domain, by observing timing differences in execution of filter code.

The weakness was disclosed 06/25/2013 by Paul Stone with Context Information Security as MFSA 2013-55 as not defined advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at mozilla.org. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with Mozilla. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-1693 since 02/13/2013. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1068 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 66996 (CentOS 5 / 6 : firefox / xulrunner (CESA-2013:0981)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 121294 (Red Hat Update for Xulrunner Firefox (RHSA-2013:0981)).

Upgrading to version 22.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
