Mozilla Firefox up to 21.0 onreadystatechange memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Mozilla Firefox up to 21.0 (Web Browser). Affected by this vulnerability is the function onreadystatechange. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Mozilla Firefox before 22.0, Firefox ESR 17.x before 17.0.7, Thunderbird before 17.0.7, and Thunderbird ESR 17.x before 17.0.7 do not properly handle onreadystatechange events in conjunction with page reloading, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via a crafted web site that triggers an attempt to execute data at an unmapped memory location.

The weakness was shared 06/25/2013 by Nils as MFSA 2013-53 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at mozilla.org. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2013-1690 since 02/13/2013. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.

A public exploit has been developed by Metasploit and been published 2 months after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at pastebin.mozilla.org. It is declared as attacked. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 66996 (CentOS 5 / 6 : firefox / xulrunner (CESA-2013:0981)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 121294 (Red Hat Update for Xulrunner Firefox (RHSA-2013:0981)). The CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog lists this issue since 03/28/2022 with a due date of 04/18/2022:

Apply updates per vendor instructions.

Upgrading to version 22.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 13290.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (27429), Tenable (66996), SecurityFocus (BID 60778†), OSVDB (94584†) and Secunia (SA53953†).
