Use-after-free vulnerability in the nsIDocument::GetRootElement function in Mozilla Firefox before 22.0, Firefox ESR 17.x before 17.0.7, Thunderbird before 17.0.7, and Thunderbird ESR 17.x before 17.0.7 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (heap memory corruption) via a crafted web site.

The weakness was presented 06/25/2013 by Abhishek Arya (Inferno) with Google Chrome Security Team as MFSA 2013-50 as not defined advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at mozilla.org. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with Mozilla. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-1685 since 02/13/2013. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 66996 (CentOS 5 / 6 : firefox / xulrunner (CESA-2013:0981)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks.
