A vulnerability was found in FFmpeg up to 1.2.1 (Multimedia Processing Software). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is the function modified_levinson_durbin of the file libavcodec/sonic.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a off-by-one vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-193. A product calculates or uses an incorrect maximum or minimum value that is 1 more, or 1 less, than the correct value. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The weakness was presented 06/19/2013 by Mateusz Jurczyk and Gynvael Coldwind with Google Security Team as sonicenc: fix off by 1 error as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is shared for download at git.videolan.org. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack can only be initiated within the local network. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.videolan.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
