Xen 4.4.x/4.5.x/4.6.x/4.7.x QEMU Shared Ring Processor Host race condition

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Xen 4.4.x/4.5.x/4.6.x/4.7.x (Virtualization Software). This vulnerability affects an unknown functionality of the component QEMU Shared Ring Processor. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability (Host). The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Race condition in QEMU in Xen allows local x86 HVM guest OS administrators to gain privileges by changing certain data on shared rings, aka a "double fetch" vulnerability.

The bug was discovered 11/22/2016. The weakness was presented 11/22/2016 by yanghongke with Huawei as XSA-197 as confirmed security advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at xenbits.xen.org. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2016-9381 since 11/17/2016. The attack needs to be approached locally. The successful exploitation needs a single authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.
