A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Xen 4.4.x/4.5.x/4.6.x/4.7.x on 64-bit mode (Virtualization Software). This issue affects some unknown functionality of the component Register Operand Processor. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability (Host). The bug was discovered 11/22/2016. The weakness was shared 11/22/2016 by George Dunlap with Citrix as XSA-195 as confirmed security advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at xenbits.xen.org. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2016-9383 since 11/17/2016. The exploitation is known to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. A simple authentication is required for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 900047 , which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 276244 (Fedora Security Update for xen (FEDORA-2016-999e1a6927)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
