The object_common1 function in ext/standard/var_unserializer.c in PHP before 5.6.30, 7.0.x before 7.0.15, and 7.1.x before 7.1.1 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (buffer over-read and application crash) via crafted serialized data that is mishandled in a finish_nested_data call.
The bug was discovered 01/19/2017. The weakness was presented 01/24/2017 (Website). The advisory is available at php.net. This vulnerability was named CVE-2016-10161 since 01/24/2017. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

Upgrading to version 5.6.30, 7.0.15 or 7.1.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
