A vulnerability was found in potrace up to 1.12. It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects the function bm_readbody_bmp of the file bitmap_io.c of the component BMP Image Handler. The bm_readbody_bmp function in bitmap_io.c in potrace before 1.13 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and crash) via a crafted BMP image, a different vulnerability than CVE-2016-8695 and CVE-2016-8696.
The bug was discovered 08/18/2016. The weakness was published 01/31/2017 by Agostino Sarubbo with Gentoo (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at potrace.sourceforge.net. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2016-8694 since 10/15/2016. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
