The bm_new function in bitmap.h in potrace before 1.13 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (divide-by-zero error and crash) via a crafted BMP image.

The bug was discovered 08/18/2016. The weakness was presented 01/31/2017 by Agostino Sarubbo with Gentoo (Website). The advisory is available at openwall.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2016-8697 since 10/15/2016. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1499 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
