Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in potrace up to 1.12. Affected by this vulnerability is the function bm_readbody_bmp of the file bitmap_io.c of the component BMP Image Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:
The bm_readbody_bmp function in bitmap_io.c in potrace before 1.13 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and crash) via a crafted BMP image, a different vulnerability than CVE-2016-8694 and CVE-2016-8695.
The bug was discovered 08/18/2016. The weakness was disclosed 01/31/2017 by Agostino Sarubbo with Gentoo (Website). The advisory is shared at potrace.sourceforge.net. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2016-8696 since 10/15/2016. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 69 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 94293 (Debian DLA-675-1 : potrace security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 276815 (Fedora Security Update for potrace (FEDORA-2017-d7739ff31b)).
Upgrading to version 1.13 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
