A vulnerability was found in potrace up to 1.12. It has been classified as critical. Affected is the function bm_readbody_bmp of the file bitmap_io.c of the component BMP Image Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Heap-based buffer overflow in the bm_readbody_bmp function in bitmap_io.c in potrace before 1.13 allows remote attackers to have unspecified impact via a crafted BMP image, a different vulnerability than CVE-2016-8698, CVE-2016-8699, CVE-2016-8700, CVE-2016-8702, and CVE-2016-8703.
The bug was discovered 08/18/2016. The weakness was disclosed 01/31/2017 by Agostino Sarubbo with Gentoo (Website). The advisory is available at potrace.sourceforge.net. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2016-8701 since 10/15/2016. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 69 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 94293 (Debian DLA-675-1 : potrace security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 276815 (Fedora Security Update for potrace (FEDORA-2017-d7739ff31b)).
Upgrading to version 1.13 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
