Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in GraphicsMagick 1.3.25 (Image Processing Software). Affected by this issue is the function MagickMalloc of the file magick/memory.c of the component Image Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
The MagickMalloc function in magick/memory.c in GraphicsMagick 1.3.25 allows remote attackers to have unspecified impact via a crafted image, which triggers a memory allocation failure and a "file truncation error for corrupt file."
The bug was discovered 10/10/2016. The weakness was shared 02/15/2017 by Agostino Sarubbo with Gentoo (oss-sec). The advisory is shared for download at openwall.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2016-8684 since 10/15/2016. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 59 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 95704 (openSUSE Security Update : GraphicsMagick (openSUSE-2016-1430)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 175922 (Debian Security Update for graphicsmagick (DSA 3746-1)).
