A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Mozilla Firefox up to 22.0 (Web Browser). Affected by this vulnerability is the function nsCString::CharAt of the component WAV File Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-404. Mozilla Firefox before 23.0 and SeaMonkey before 2.20 allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via a crafted WAV file that is not properly handled by the nsCString::CharAt function.
The weakness was presented 08/06/2013 by Aki Helin (moz_bug_r_a4) with Oulu University Secure Programming Group as MFSA 2013-67 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at mozilla.org. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with Mozilla. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2013-1708 since 02/13/2013. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details and also a private exploit are known. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1499 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69278 (FreeBSD : mozilla -- multiple vulnerabilities (0998e79d-0055-11e3-905b-0025905a4771)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 195989 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Firefox Vulnerabilities (USN-1924-1)).
Upgrading to version 23.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
