Multiple untrusted search path vulnerabilities in updater.exe in Mozilla Updater in Mozilla Firefox before 23.0, Firefox ESR 17.x before 17.0.8, Thunderbird before 17.0.8, and Thunderbird ESR 17.x before 17.0.8 on Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows 8, and Windows Server 2012 allow local users to gain privileges via a Trojan horse DLL in (1) the update directory or (2) the current working directory.

The weakness was disclosed 08/06/2013 by Federico Lanusse (Ash) with Mozilla as MFSA 2013-71 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at mozilla.org. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with Mozilla. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-1712 since 02/13/2013. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1574 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69278 (FreeBSD : mozilla -- multiple vulnerabilities (0998e79d-0055-11e3-905b-0025905a4771)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166230 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for Mozilla Firefox (SUSE-SU-2013:1325-2)).

Upgrading to version 23.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
