The Mail Merge Tool in Microsoft Word 2002 for Windows, when Microsoft Access is present on a system, allows remote attackers to execute Visual Basic (VBA) scripts within a mail merge document that is saved in HTML format, aka a "Variant of MS00-071, Word Mail Merge Vulnerability" (CVE-2000-0788).
The weakness was presented 08/12/2002 as MS02-031 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared at microsoft.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2002-0619. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 11336 (MS02-031: Cumulative patches for Excel and Word for Windows (324458)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110153 (Microsoft Excel and Word Cumulative Security Update (MS02-031)).
Applying the patch MS02-031 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
