A vulnerability has been found in Ethereal (Packet Analyzer Software) and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is the function dissect_attribute_value_pairs
of the file packet-radius.c of the component RADIUS Dissector. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:
The dissect_attribute_value_pairs function in packet-radius.c for Ethereal 0.8.13 to 0.10.2 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) via a malformed RADIUS packet that triggers a null dereference.
The bug was discovered 03/22/2004. The weakness was shared 05/04/2004 by Stefan Esser as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2004-0365 since 03/22/2004. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 43 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 12537 , which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 31599.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (15571) and Tenable (12537). The entries 21821, 21831 and 22885 are related to this item.
