Apple Mac OS X up to 10.4.3 ensurerows memory allocation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Apple Mac OS X up to 10.4.3 (Operating System). This vulnerability affects the function khtml::rendertablesection::ensurerows. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory allocation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-789. The product allocates memory based on an untrusted, large size value, but it does not ensure that the size is within expected limits, allowing arbitrary amounts of memory to be allocated. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:

The khtml::RenderTableSection::ensureRows function in KHTMLParser in Apple Mac OS X 10.4.3 and earlier, as used by Safari and TextEdit, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory consumption and application crash) via HTML files with a large ROWSPAN attribute in a TD tag.

The bug was discovered 03/01/2006. The weakness was presented 12/22/2005 by Tom Ferris (Website). The advisory is shared for download at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability was named CVE-2005-4504 since 12/22/2005. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 20990 (Mac OS X Multiple Vulnerabilities (Security Update 2006-001)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115334 (Apple Mac OS X Security Update 2006-001 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2006-03-01)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (25032) and Tenable (20990). See 1918, 26962, 26742 and 26741 for similar entries.
