XMB Extreme Message Board up to 1.9.6 Apache HTTP Server memcp.php langfilenew path traversal

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in XMB Extreme Message Board up to 1.9.6 (Forum Software). This affects an unknown code block of the file memcp.php of the component Apache HTTP Server. The manipulation of the argument langfilenew with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Directory traversal vulnerability in memcp.php in XMB (Extreme Message Board) 1.9.6 and earlier allows remote attackers to include and execute arbitrary local files via directory traversal sequences in the langfilenew parameter, as demonstrated by injecting PHP sequences into an Apache HTTP Server log file, which is then included by header.php.

The weakness was disclosed 08/16/2006 by rgod (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2006-4191 since 08/16/2006. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details and a public exploit are known. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1006 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as functional. By approaching the search of inurl:memcp.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (28356) and Exploit-DB (2178). The entry 31651 is pretty similar.
