Microsoft Windows Server 2003/XP Kerberos CRC32 Checksum cryptographic issues

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Microsoft Windows Server 2003/XP (Operating System). This affects the function CRC32 Checksum of the component Kerberos. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cryptographic issues vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-310. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, and integrity. The summary by CVE is:

Kerberos in Microsoft Windows XP SP2 and SP3 and Server 2003 SP2 supports weak hashing algorithms, which allows local users to gain privileges by operating a service that sends crafted service tickets, as demonstrated by the CRC32 algorithm, aka "Kerberos Unkeyed Checksum Vulnerability."

The weakness was presented 02/08/2011 with MIT Kerberos Team as MS11-013 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2011-0043 since 12/10/2010. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1600 for this issue.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 51913 (MS11-013: Vulnerabilities in Kerberos Could Allow Elevation of Privilege (2496930)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90686 (Microsoft Windows Kerberos Elevation of Privilege Vulnerability (MS11-013)).

Applying the patch MS11-013 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (64902) and Tenable (51913). See VDB-4295 for similar entry.
