xine xine-lib up to 1.1.14 open_mod_file demux_mng.c real_parse_audio_specific_data memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in xine xine-lib (Multimedia Player Software). Affected is the function real_parse_audio_specific_data of the file demux_mng.c of the component open_mod_file. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:

xine-lib 1.1.12, and other versions before 1.1.15, does not check for failure of malloc in circumstances including (1) the mymng_process_header function in demux_mng.c, (2) the open_mod_file function in demux_mod.c, and (3) frame_buffer allocation in the real_parse_audio_specific_data function in demux_real.c, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via a crafted media file.

The weakness was presented 08/22/2008 by Will Drewry with CERT as confirmed posting (Bugtraq). The advisory is available at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2008-5233 since 11/25/2008. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 34133 (Fedora 9 : xine-lib-1.1.15-1.fc9 (2008-7512)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks and running in the context l.

Upgrading to version 1 Beta2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (44639) and Tenable (34133). See 43304, 45213, 45212 and 45211 for similar entries.
