A vulnerability was found in Puppetlabs Puppet Enterprise Users up to 2.0.1 (Service Management Software) and classified as critical. The change_user method in the SUIDManager (lib/puppet/util/suidmanager.rb) in Puppet 2.6.x before 2.6.14 and 2.7.x before 2.7.11, and Puppet Enterprise (PE) Users 1.0, 1.1, 1.2.x, 2.0.x before 2.0.3 does not properly manage group privileges, which allows local users to gain privileges via vectors related to (1) the change_user not dropping supplementary groups in certain conditions, (2) changes to the eguid without associated changes to the egid, or (3) the addition of the real gid to supplementary groups.
The weakness was presented 05/29/2012 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at hermes.opensuse.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-1053 since 02/13/2012. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1068 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 74671 (openSUSE Security Update : puppet (openSUSE-SU-2012:0835-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350694 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for puppet: ALAS-2012-053).
Upgrading to version 2.0.2 eliminates this vulnerability.
