OpenSSL 0.9.8/1.0.0/1.0.1/1.0.2 Base64 Decoder memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.
6.4$5k-$25k0.00

A vulnerability was found in OpenSSL 0.9.8/1.0.0/1.0.1/1.0.2 (Network Encryption Software). It has been declared as very critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown code of the component Base64 Decoder. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

The issue has been introduced in 07/05/2005. The weakness was published 03/19/2015 by David Ramos as secadv_20150319.txt as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at openssl.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2015-0292 since 11/18/2014. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 04/15/2022).

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3544 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 82900 (AIX OpenSSL Advisory : openssl_advisory13.asc), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family AIX Local Security Checks and running in the context l. This NASL code is used to determine the existence of the issue:

if (aix_check_ifix(release:"5.3", patch:"IV71446m9b", package:"openssl.base", minfilesetver:"0.0.0.0", maxfilesetver:"0.9.8.2504") < 0) flag++;
if (aix_check_ifix(release:"6.1", patch:"IV71446m9b", package:"openssl.base", minfilesetver:"0.0.0.0", maxfilesetver:"0.9.8.2504") < 0) flag++;
if (aix_check_ifix(release:"7.1", patch:"IV71446m9b", package:"openssl.base", minfilesetver:"0.0.0.0", maxfilesetver:"0.9.8.2504") < 0) flag++;
The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 185104 (HP-UX Running OpenSSL Remote Denial of Service Vulnerability (HPSBUX03334)).

Upgrading to version 0.9.8zf, 1.0.0r, 1.0.1m or 1.0.2a eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (101670) and Tenable (82900). Additional details are provided at grahamcluley.com. Similar entries are available at 74043, 74044, 74045 and 74046.
