OpenSSL 0.9.8/1.0.0/1.0.1/1.0.2 SSLv2 Message CLIENT-MASTER-KEY Message input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in OpenSSL 0.9.8/1.0.0/1.0.1/1.0.2 (Network Encryption Software). It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects an unknown code block of the component SSLv2 Message Handler. The manipulation as part of a CLIENT-MASTER-KEY Message leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. Impacted is availability.

The issue has been introduced in 07/05/2005. The weakness was released 03/19/2015 by Sean Burford with OpenSSL as secadv_20150319.txt as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at openssl.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2015-0293 since 11/18/2014. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3544 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 82900 (AIX OpenSSL Advisory : openssl_advisory13.asc), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family AIX Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 185104 (HP-UX Running OpenSSL Remote Denial of Service Vulnerability (HPSBUX03334)).

Upgrading to version 0.9.8zf, 1.0.0r, 1.0.1m or 1.0.2a eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (101671) and Tenable (82900). grahamcluley.com is providing further details. Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at 74043, 74044, 74045 and 74046.
