The chmd_init_decomp function in chmd.c in libmspack before 0.5 does not properly validate the reset interval, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (divide-by-zero error and application crash) via a crafted CHM file.
The weakness was released 06/11/2015 by Jakub Wilk as confirmed mailinglist post (oss-sec). The advisory is available at seclists.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2015-4467 since 06/10/2015. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 87276 (SUSE SLED11 / SLES11 Security Update : libmspack (SUSE-SU-2015:2215-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 168364 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security update for libmspack (SUSE-SU-2016:0011-1)).
Upgrading to version 0.5 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 7 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
