No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The advisory points out:

An issue existed in HFS drive mounting. This was addressed by additional validation checks.

A public exploit has been developed in Ruby. It is declared as proof-of-concept. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com.

Upgrading to version 2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
