Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in valider_xml.php in SPIP 3.1.2 and earlier allows remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via the var_url parameter in a valider_xml action.
The bug was discovered 09/15/2016. The weakness was disclosed 10/12/2016 by Nicolas Chatelain with Sysdream Labs as cve-2016-7981: spip 312 reflected cross-site scripting as not defined mailinglist post (Full-Disclosure). It is possible to read the advisory at seclists.org. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the project team. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2016-7981 since 09/09/2016. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059.007 according to MITRE ATT&CK. Responsible for the vulnerability is the following code:

A public exploit has been developed by Nicolas Chatelain and been published immediately after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at seclists.org. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 15 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. By approaching the search of inurl:valider_xml.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 94476 (Debian DLA-695-1 : spip security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 11709 (SPIP Multiple Remote Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading to version 3.1.3 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
