Details
A vulnerability was found in GNU binutils 2.28 (Programming Tool Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is the function score_opcodes of the file opcodes/score7-dis.c. The manipulation as part of a Binary File leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
The score_opcodes function in opcodes/score7-dis.c in GNU Binutils 2.28 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (buffer overflow and application crash) or possibly have unspecified other impact via a crafted binary file, as demonstrated by mishandling of this file during "objdump -D" execution.
The bug was discovered 06/20/2017. The weakness was published 06/19/2017 by Alex as Bug 21576 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is available at sourceware.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2017-9742 since 06/18/2017. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed by Alexandre Adamski and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is available at github.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 103270 (GLSA-201709-02 : Binutils: Multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l.
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 4 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
