A vulnerability was found in Wireshark (Packet Analyzer Software) and classified as problematic. This issue affects some unknown functionality of the file epan/dissectors/packet-q931.c of the component Q.931 Dissector. The manipulation as part of a Malformed Packet leads to a use after free vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-416. In Wireshark 2.6.0, 2.4.0 to 2.4.6, and 2.2.0 to 2.2.14, the Q.931 dissector could crash. This was addressed in epan/dissectors/packet-q931.c by avoiding a use-after-free after a malformed packet prevented certain cleanup.
The bug was discovered 05/22/2018. The weakness was published 05/22/2018 as Bug 14689 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared at bugs.wireshark.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2018-11358 since 05/21/2018. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
