Wireshark up to 2.6.0 RRC Dissector epan/proto.c null pointer dereference

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Wireshark (Packet Analyzer Software). It has been classified as problematic. Affected is an unknown part of the file epan/proto.c of the component RRC Dissector. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:

In Wireshark 2.6.0, 2.4.0 to 2.4.6, and 2.2.0 to 2.2.14, the RRC dissector and other dissectors could crash. This was addressed in epan/proto.c by avoiding a NULL pointer dereference.

The bug was discovered 05/22/2018. The weakness was released 05/22/2018 as Bug 14703 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is available at bugs.wireshark.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2018-11359 since 05/21/2018. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely.
