A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Firefox up to 28.0.1 (Web Browser) and classified as critical. This issue affects the function mozilla::dom::OscillatorNodeEngine::ComputeCustom of the component Web Audio. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. The mozilla::dom::OscillatorNodeEngine::ComputeCustom function in the Web Audio subsystem in Mozilla Firefox before 29.0 and SeaMonkey before 2.26 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds read, memory corruption, and application crash) via crafted content.
The weakness was released 04/29/2014 by Ash as MFSA2014-36 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at mozilla.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2014-1522 since 01/16/2014. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 73848 (Fedora 19 : firefox-29.0-5.fc19 / thunderbird-24.5.0-1.fc19 / xulrunner-29.0-1.fc19 (2014-5829)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166971 (OpenSuSE Security Update for Mozilla Firefox (openSUSE-SU-2014:0599-1)).
Upgrading to version 29.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
