A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Firefox up to 28.0.1 (Web Browser). It has been classified as critical. Affected is the function read_u32 of the component JPG Image Handler. Heap-based buffer overflow in the read_u32 function in Mozilla Firefox before 29.0, Firefox ESR 24.x before 24.5, Thunderbird before 24.5, and SeaMonkey before 2.26 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds read and application crash) via a crafted JPEG image.

The weakness was disclosed 04/29/2014 by Abhishek Arya (Inferno) with Google Chrome Security Team as MFSA2014-37 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at mozilla.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2014-1523 since 01/16/2014. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 73790 (CentOS 5 / 6 : firefox (CESA-2014:0448)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 122056 (Red Hat Update for Xulrunner firefox (RHSA-2014:0448)).

Upgrading to version 29.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
