The Web Notification API in Mozilla Firefox before 29.0, Firefox ESR 24.x before 24.5, Thunderbird before 24.5, and SeaMonkey before 2.26 allows remote attackers to bypass intended source-component restrictions and execute arbitrary JavaScript code in a privileged context via a crafted web page for which Notification.permission is granted.
The weakness was disclosed 04/29/2014 by Mariusz Mlynski as MFSA2014-42 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at mozilla.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2014-1529 since 01/16/2014. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 73790 (CentOS 5 / 6 : firefox (CESA-2014:0448)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 122056 (Red Hat Update for Xulrunner firefox (RHSA-2014:0448)).
Upgrading to version 29.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
