Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in HTTP2 (version unknown). This affects an unknown function of the component Header Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource consumption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-400. The product does not properly control the allocation and maintenance of a limited resource, thereby enabling an actor to influence the amount of resources consumed, eventually leading to the exhaustion of available resources. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:
Some HTTP/2 implementations are vulnerable to a header leak, potentially leading to a denial of service. The attacker sends a stream of headers with a 0-length header name and 0-length header value, optionally Huffman encoded into 1-byte or greater headers. Some implementations allocate memory for these headers and keep the allocation alive until the session dies. This can consume excess memory.
The weakness was disclosed 08/13/2019 as not defined mailinglist post (Bugtraq). It is possible to read the advisory at seclists.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2019-9516 since 03/01/2019. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 01/15/2025). The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1499 according to MITRE ATT&CK. Due to its background and reception, this vulnerability has a historic impact.
