A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Mozilla Firefox up to 1.5.0.1 (Web Browser). This affects an unknown function of the component Javascript XML Handler. Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird 1.x before 1.5.0.2 and 1.0.x before 1.0.8, Mozilla Suite before 1.7.13, and SeaMonkey before 1.0.1 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via "an invalid and non-sensical ordering of table-related tags" that results in a negative array index.
The weakness was presented 04/13/2006 by Georgi Guninski (moz_bug_r_a4) with TippingPoint and the Zero Day Initiative as MFSA2006-17 as not defined advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at mozilla.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2006-0748. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21225 (Firefox < 1.5.0.2 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117722 (CentOS Security Update for Firefox (CESA-2006:0328)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at mozilla.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 3977.
